Yup, thats right, today there was a semi-riot at Swansea University today (BBC News). Students finally got fed up of the university’s retarded ability to ignore them.

Recent acts of stupidity by Swansea University

1. Attempted relocation of the Natural Sciences Library (NSL) – in their infinite wisdom, the university has decided that to make room for another department, they will close the NSL (which serves biology, whats left of chemistry and geography). This will then be relocated to the main Library and Information Services (LIS) building with the loss of 150 computer workstations.

Now my initial thought was along the lines of “it doesn’t affect me, so i’ll ignore it”. However after more thought, i’ve realised that it does actually affect me and will likely affect most students at the university. For any of those that have actually attempted to enter the library during the normal working day, you will see what i mean. It is virtually impossible to get into there, let alone get a place at a computer. Now take the extra 200 students a day that use the 150 workstations in the NSL and put them into LIS and think what havoc it is going to cause.

Of course it isnt all doom and gloom, there is a reason why the university wants to get rid of the NSL. It’ll make space for the new Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT) which will create links between Computer Science and Physics as well as businesses from across the world. However, as great as this sounds, they still need to deal with the issues surrounding LIS before they shutdown the NSL.

2. Banning of laptops in the Taliesin – Campus Catering have decided to make the Taliesin a homework, essay and laptop free zone! What a wonderful idea! Lets piss off our biggest customers (computer science students). In fact, lets piss them off even more by asking the staff if they have any objections to the ban, but not bother asking the students at all! Grrr, stupid catering services.

3. Closing Computer Science Labs 2 hours earlier every evening - Yet again, in their egotistic way, UWS Security have decided to start closing the computer science labs at 6 in the evening instead of 8. If you put aside the fact that our labs actually close (where 99% of other universities have 24 hour access), our labs are advertised to be open till 8. They are guarded by swipe card access that records all students who enter the room, they have recorded CCTV and all equipment is literally nailed to the desks. So how in hell can they justify closing the labs at 6 because someone in a DIFFERENT department stole something from ANOTHER building. Also, lets make up this new rule without telling the Comp Sci department OR consulting with students. Retards.

4. Others - im sure there are many others, but these will do for now!

Conclusions

  • this university doesnt seem to care about its students
  • the students are getting pissed off
  • riots have already started occuring

As you can tell, this university’s disregard for us students is starting to annoy me somewhat!
